摘要
Four large-scale bending tests on a pair of plate-girder beams which were connected by longitudinally stiffened decks of varying geometry are used to discuss the appearance of first yield as a criterion of failure. Such a criterion has a fairly sound logical basis but needs the support of an empirical rule about the effective width of plating between stiffness. Such rules appear in some codes of practice and they are applied to the four tests. It is found that some codes are conservative while others do not give accurate results when the plating is slender. The most consistent results are obtained when one of the simpler effective width rules is used.
