56 female Sprague-Dawley rats were required to run, to turn, or to rear in order to avoid shock, and different groups were required either to make the same response or 1 of the other responses in order to escape shock following a failure to avoid. Only in the case of the turning response was avoidance learning materially affected by the escape contingency.
