DYNAMICS OF THE ALCOHOL-INDUCED FLUORESCENCE OF QUINOLINE

Kinetics of structured ultraviolet and violet fluorescence of quinoline (1-azanaphthalene) in various low temperature alcoholic glasses are reported. The lifetime of the structured ultraviolet fluorescence is (2.2 ± 0.2) ns in both concentrated and dilute alcoholic glasses. This band is assigned to quinoline molecules surrounded by several polar solvent molecules. The non-exponential decay rate of the violet fluorescence observed for hydrocarbon glasses with small amounts of alcohols is identical with the decay of quinolinium chloride and is assigned to 1:1 quinoline-alcohol complexes. © 1979.
