摘要：

The Brundtland Commission on Environment and Development considered the overriding political concept of 'Our Common Future' is sustainable development. This paper considers the complexities of sustainable development in the mining/mineral development arena. Companies in the 1990s will have to develop clear environmental plans, and nowhere is this more visible and demanding than in mining in Australia. The wide range of issues extending from pastoral concerns to Aboriginal land rights are discussed. The important role of Government is highlighted. The range of strategic options open are discussed and key strategic considerations for the attainment of sustainable development are provided.
