A 16-year-old girl presented with the sudden onset of transient quadriplegia that occurred while she was swimming. Roentgenograms showed abnormal intraspinal calcification. A computerized tomographic scan was virtually diagnostic of a solitary osteochondroma arising from the posterior arch of the atlas. Surgical excision was curative.
