PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NDBA2CU3OY THICK-FILMS IN THE ND-BA-CU-O SYSTEM

The preparation of thick films of the NdBa2Cu3Oy (Nd-123) phase by using partial-melting techniques (PMT) of powders deposited on MgO substrates by drying alcoholic suspensions is reported. The effects of the starting composition and processing conditions (temperature and annealing time) on the superconducting properties of the Nd1+xBa2Cu3Oy (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.50) system were investigated. An improvement of the quality of the films in the Nd-Ba-Cu-O system, as far as the microstructure and magnetic properties are concerned, was observed in the samples with nonstoichiometric starting compositions; the growth of the Nd-123 phase with tetragonal symmetry was detected for x = 0.5. The magnetization measurements, performed on samples annealed in O-2, showed a T-c as high as 91.5 K and a weak field dependence due to the effectiveness of the pinning centers.
