POSITIVE BONE-SCAN IN A BONE ISLAND - CASE-REPORT

Bone islands are diagnosed essentially on the basis of their roentgenographic appearance and clinically they rarely, if ever, cause symptoms. It is generally presumed that the metabolic activity of a bone island is about the same as that of the surrounding cortical bone and that it will therefore not be visualized on a bone scan. There was a single previous case report of a positive bone scan associated with a bone island, the diagnosis having been made by examination of a trocar biopsy specimen. The case reported here is the first report of a bone island with a positive bone scan in which the lesion was histologically documented after en bloc resection.
