PROTON-MAGIC-ANGLE-SPINNING NMR AND IR-ABSORPTION-SPECTRA OF STRONGLY HYDROGEN-BONDED HYDROXYL-GROUPS IN OXIDE GLASSES

H-1-magic-angle-spinning NMR spectra of lead and barium phosphate glasses containing 2-7 mol% residual 'water' in the form of P-OH groups were measured. An apparently single resonance with asymmetry in shape was observed at around 13-14 ppm (TMS standard) on MAS-NMR spectra of both samples. Two OH-absorption bands centered at around 2750 cm-1 and 2250 cm-1 were seen in infrared absorption spectra of the same samples. The major features of NMR spectra obtained were reproduced by transformation of the lineshape of the infrared absorption spectra using the correlation between O(H)...O distances and the OH-stretching band positions or H-1-isotropic chemical shifts.
