摘要
A new method is applied to the study of the diffusion of the stable isotope O-18 in a solid. It consists of measuring the spectrum of the alpha-particles produced by the nuclear reaction O-18(p,alpha)N-15 when the solid is bombarded by monoenergetic protons. This alpha-particle spectrum is closely related to the distribution of O-18 atoms in the solid. By this method we have studied diffusion in crystalline quartz heated in high-pressure O-18-enriched steam. The results indicate that the diffusion was strongly anisotropic. At 667 C and 820 bar pressure, the diffusion coefficients were similar to 8.10(-14) cm(2)/sec perpendicular to the c-axis and similar to 4.10(-12) cm(2)/sec parallel to the c-axis.
