Applications of the fiberoptic bronchoscope (fiberscope) in the intensive care unit setting include evaluation of the airway, trachea and bronchial intubation, aid to changing endotracheal tubes, and placement for difficult nasogastric tubing. Intubation of the awake versus the unconscious or anesthetized patient is discussed along with the devices available. Finally, success of alleviating major airway complications begins with proper training.
