LITHIUM INTERCALATION INTO MIXED VANADIUM MOLYBDENUM OXIDES

Lithium insertion was studied in (V1-yMoy)2O5 0 less-than-or-equal-to y less-than-or-equal-to 0.3, V9Mo6O40 and VMoO5. The first two phases are shear structures of a ReO3-type lattice with V and Mo randomly distributed over the same types of sites. The third compound is a three-dimensional network of comer sharing VO6-octahedra and Mo4-tetrahedra. Substitution of V with Mo in (V, Mo)2O5 leads to the introduction of a new potential plateau in the discharge curve. This level is associated with reduction of Mo(6)-centers. The materials with shear structures can take up approximately 1.5 Li per transition metal atom, but the host structure breaks down and new quasiamorphous phases are formed. These phases are able to cycle large amounts of Li reversibly. VMoO5 can cycle approximately 1.7 Li per formula unit with a minor change of the host structure. This material cycles well, and retains its crystallinity throughout its cycle life.
