HISTOCHEMICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF 5-HYDROXYTRYPTAMINE IN PINEAL ORGANS OF TELEOSTS (SALMO GAIRDNERI AND ATHERINOPSIS CALIFORNIENSIS)

Occurrence and localization of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in pineals of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and jacksmelt (Atherinopsis californiensis) were investigated by means of the fluorescence histochemical procedure perfected by Hillarp and Falck. All fish were kept in a 14-hr/day photoperiod and were experimentally injected and autopsied either during the night or during the day. Although little if any 5-HT-specific fluorescence was seen in control (saline-injected) fish pineals, others injected with either or both 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and iproniazid (a monoamine oxidase inhibitor) did show such fluorescence. Active uptake by the fish pineals of 5-HTP and synthesis of 5-HT appear likely. Differences in results according to time of treatment and autopsy were not detectable. © 1969.
