HYDROGEN STORAGE IN ISOLATED ELECTRICAL ENERGY-SYSTEMS WITH PHOTOVOLTAIC AND WIND ENERGY

Within the Saudi-German project HYSOLAR, system studies have been done to identify potential applications of solar hydrogen. This paper presents an economic system design of autonomous grids including hydrogen storage (made up of an electrolyser, pressure storage and a fuel cell). A renewable energy supply (photovoltaic, wind energy converter) is used to match the electrical load of an island community. The effects of different weather conditions and share of PV/wind energy production on system design are investigated. Overall electricity costs are calculated for different financial parameters. Electricity costs depend strongly on intensity and profile of weather and type of converter, which makes a careful investigation of the optimal mixture of PV/wind power necessary. Even if the calculated electricity costs indicate economically feasible situations, much work is still to be done in order to optimize the system configuration and to demonstrate hydrogen storage working reliably in isolated grids.
