A STUDY OF THE STABILITY OF THE (BI,PB)(2)SR2CA2CU3OX PHASE IN AG-SHEATHED TAPES

Tapes prepared with prereacted Bi(2223) powders of nominal composition: Bi1.7Pb0.34Sr1.83Ca1.97Cu3.13Ox have been heated at a constant rate of 30 degrees C/h and quenched from various temperatures within 300 and 900 degrees C. It was found that the Bi(2223) phase decomposes at temperatures as low as 400 degrees C, giving rise to the formation of Bi0.5Pb3Sr2.5Ca2Cu1Ox, Bi-2(Sr,Ca)(3)O-6 as well as CuO. Above 700 degrees C, the Bi(2212) phase is formed, while the Bi(2223) phase is recovered at temperatures higher than 820 degrees C.
