ANISOTROPY ENHANCEMENT BY PR SUBSTITUTION IN Y1-XPRXBA2CU3O7-DELTA SINGLE-CRYSTALS

The coherence length anisotropy ratio gamma of Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta superconducting single crystals (x less-than-or-equal-to 0.45) has been measured by the equilibrium torque magnetometry method. The experiments were performed in 1.5 to 2 T fields at temperatures several K below the onset T(c) of superconductivity. The anisotropy gamma value of Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta increases with increasing Pr concentration to gamma = 21.5 +/- 1.5 for x = 0.45 from gamma = 9.3 +/- 0.3 for x = 0. The Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta system is isostructural with YBa2Cu3O7-delta, and the suppression of T(c) is generally believed to be due to pair breaking and hole localization by the Pr+3 4f-orbital on the CuO2 valence band. The anisotropy increase in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta is compared with the anisotropy increase in the YBa2Cu3-xFexO7-delta system where hole filling in the CuO2 planes is likely involved. The fundamental reason for the anisotropy enhancement is not clear at the present time.
