Reported here are the synthesis and molecular structure of Fe2(CO)8[mu-CuP(t-Bu)3]2, which contains an Fe2Cu2 bufferfly metal core with the Fe-Fe single bond doubly bridged by two CuP(t-Bu)3 fragments. The differences in the Fe-Cu bond distances (ca. 0.1 angstrom) and the deviation of the metal core from planarity (43.8-degrees) can be attributed to the second-order Jahn-Teller effect and the steric effect imposed by the bulky P(t-Bu)3 ligands. Crystal data for Fe2(CO)8[mu-CuP(t-Bu)3]2: orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 8.881 (3) angstrom, b = 14.208 (3) angstrom, c = 31.114 (6) angstrom, Z = 4, and R = 0.027.
