Experiences with control and eradication of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in large geographic areas have only been attained in the Scandinavian countries including Finland. in Scandinavia, the occurrence of BVDV varies greatly from a very low prevalence in Finland to a very high prevalence in Denmark. The control programs, and the eradication program in Denmark, are described and discussed. Particular emphasis is given to herd tests that can be used to indicate the infection status of herds and also for surveillance purposes. In Denmark, where the annual losses resulting, from BVDV have been calculated to be approximately 100 million Dkr ($17 million US), the total costs connected with the control and eradication have been estimated to be approximately 160 million Dkr or $27 million US.
