Amorphous Al2Pt has been synthesized by solid-state reaction (SSR) of composite metal multilayers produced by mechanical deformation of elemental metal ribbons. The amorphization reaction takes place during the mechanical deformation near ambient temperature and is also observed for samples picked up during deformation and annealed at appropriate temperatures. The resulting material was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The activation energy that controls amorphization by SSR is evaluated for isochronal and isothermal annealing and structural characteristics of the Al2Pt amorphous phase are given.
