THE CHARACTERIZATION OF ORGANOMINERAL COMPONENTS OF LOW-RANK COALS

A methodology of characterizing organomineral components of As Pontes and Meirama Spanish brown coals is developed. Analytical electron microscopy provided indirect evidence for the association of alkaline-earth elements to the organic matter of coal. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy yielded information on the nature of bonding of inorganic elements to carboxyl groups. Quantitative results were obtained by methods implying extraction or oxidative leaching followed by analysis of cations. The resulting set of procedures leads to a comprehensive characterization of this type of coal components, and deserves interest due to their role in combustion and gasification of low-rank coals. © 1990.
