LEED study of Au films deposited on cleaved surfaces of PbS at above 200°C showed the existence of a monolayer of Au oriented parallel to the substrate. The interatomic distance of Au in the monolayer was derived to be about 1.5% less than its bulk value under the assumption that the surface lattice of PbS took the same dimension as the bulk lattice. The deposits were also examined by the conventional reflection HEED and electron microscopy. © 1969 The American Institute of Physics.
