SPIN-FLOP PHASE AND EFFECT OF CE4+ AND ND3+ DOPING IN GD2CUO4

Magnetic-susceptibility measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field were performed in polycrystalline samples of Gd2CUO4, Gd1.85Ce0.15CUO4, and Gd1.8Nd0.2CUO4. The previously observed anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility of Gd2CuO4, at 20 K associated with the possible existence of weak ferromagnetic behavior was found to be strongly suppressed by Ce4+ and Nd3+ doping. Below 6.8 K the susceptibility of Gd2CUO4 is almost field independent above a few kilo-oersted, up to at least 40 kOe, suggesting the occurrence of a spin-flop phase. An exchange field of 35 kOe and an anisotropy field of 20 Oe were obtained.
