DECAY OF HG-203 . L-SUBSHELL FLUORESCENCE YIELDS AND COSTER-KRONIG TRANSITION PROBABILITIES OF TL

Thallium L-subshell fluorescence yields and Coster-Kronig transition probabilities are determined by observing L x rays in coincidence with Kα1 x rays, Kα2 x rays, and L-conversion electrons following the β decay of Hg203 to the 279-keV level in Tl203. High-resolution Si(Li) and Ge(Li) detectors are employed. The following results are obtained: ν1=0.280±0.010, ω1=0.07±0.02, f12=0.14±0.03, f13=0.56±0.05, ν2=0.371±0.010, ω2=0.319±0.010, f23=0.169±0.010, and ω3=0.306±0.010. Angular correlations between Kα1 and L x rays are studied and the following values are obtained for A2 in the relation W(θ)=1+A2P2(cosθ):0.05±0.03 for Lα x rays, 0.26±0.05 for Ll x rays. No angular correlation is found between Kα1 and Lβ x rays. The L-x-ray emission rates from L2- and L3-subshell vacancies are compared with the recent calculations by Scofield. © 1969 The American Physical Society.
