Chemisorption of NO on small Pd particles supported by thin films of Al2O3 and La2O3 has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For Al2O3-supported Pd, adsorption at 300 K appears to be nondissociative, as expected, but for La2O3-supported Pd, there is evidence for dissociative adsorption with N strongly bound to the surface. Possible explanations for this dissociative adsorption are considered together with the implications for the catalytic reduction of NO in catalysts containing Pd and La.
