The band offsets of Mg-mixed ZnSSe strained superlattices are calculated by the first-principles pseudopotential method in the local density approximation. It is shown that Mg-mixing into the barrier layers increases the band offsets for both the heavy-hole and electron states, thus strengthening the carrier confinement, which is in agreement with experiments. A chemical trend of the offset among various II-VI superlattices is discussed using the atomic orbital energies and radii.
