Fields of commercial bop in Riwaka, New Zealand, were sampled for Xiphinema diversicaudatum, the nematode vector of arabis mosaic virus (ArMV) in other countries. The nematode was detected in six out of eight fields, at a total of 31 out of 240 sample sites. Twenty-eight of the 31 sample sites at which it was found were located at the edges of fields. Localisation of populations at field edges was attributed to the presence of preferred host plants in these areas. Strategies for the elimination of ArMV from hop gardens in New Zealand are discussed.
