SPONSORSHIP AND EMPLOYMENT STATUS AMONG INDO-CHINESE REFUGEES IN THE UNITED-STATES

Examines the relationships between types of sponsorship and employment status among three ethnic groups of Indochinese refugees who arrived in the US between 1978 and 1982. A sample of 1960 refugees between the ages of 18 and 64 was used. The results of the logistic regression analysis indicate that refugees who were sponsored by voluntary agencies were more likely to be employed than those who were sponsored by their ethnic relatives. Other factors which had significant effects on employment status were health, education and urban residence in the original country, English proficiency, length of residence in the US and age. The findings revealed no significant interaction effects between ethnic groups and types of sponsorship. -Author
