A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF PREGNANCY TESTS

2 biologic and 7 immunologic pregnancy tests were evaluted on the basis of results obtained over a 10-year period. The test evaluated were the Friedman test, the rat ovarian hyperemic test, the urinary chorionic gonadotropin test, the Pregnosticon tube test, the Gravindex slide test, the Pregslide test, the HCG test and the Pregnosticon slide test. The biologic tests were found to be superior to the immunologic tests, while the immunologic tube tests were more accurate than the immunologic slide tests. Immunologic tests gave proportionately more false-negative and false-positive results than the biologic tests. Although the immunologic tests are fast and easy to perform, they are unreliable at times. It is thus recommended that 2 such tests, preferably a slide and tube test, be performed.
