RESOLUTION OF TRIFLUOROMETHYLCARBINOLS

(±)-Phenyltrifluoromethylcarbinol and (±)-t-butyltrifluoromethylcarbinol have been resolved via the 3β-acetoxy- Δ6-etienate esters, but (±)-methyltrifluoromethylcarbinol could not be resolved by this method. The completeness of the resolution of the first compound was confirmed by a gas chromatographic study of its O-methylmandelate ester, and the enantiomeric purity of a partially active sample of the methyltrifluoromethylcarbinol was determined by the same method. This glpc method was not applicable to the determination of enantiomeric purity of t-butyltrifluoromethylcarbinol. © 1968, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
