SURFACE EFFECTS OF VORTICES IN HELIUM FILMS

摘要
The presence of quantized vortices in helium films causes large fluctuating pressures on the surface. A variational method of general applicability for calculating the surface shape of flow over a vortex is developed, but it is shown that in helium films the surface tension will eliminate the disturbance. A film may be treated locally as a very narrow channel with a moveable rigid wall. If the vortices are of the order of the film thickness apart or less, it is shown that the mean pressure on the surface due to their presence may significantly reduce the film thickness.
