N-banding has been used to identify each of the fourteen chromosomes of Aegilops variabilis Eig. These patterns differ from the patterns of the nine wheat chromosomes that band with this technique. The banding pattern of Aegilops variabilis chromosome G was the same when examined in the parent species and in the wheat-variabilis addition line. - Banding analysis can be reliably carried out on both mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of wheat. Nine pairs of wheat chromosomes can be identified at meiosis. © 1979 Springer-Verlag.
