Nematode-resistant cultivars require little or no technology and are cost effective; they allow rotations to be shortened; and they do not leave toxic residues. This review examines the mechanisms and principles governing nematode-plant interactions and considers some of the parallels between nematodes and other plant pathogens, especially fungi. Major sections are on: nematode biology; terminology; genetics of resistance and virulence; measuring resistance and virulence; mechanisms of resistance; the resistant response; tolerance; modelling yield loss and tolerance; mechanisms of damage; mechanisms of yield reduction and of tolerance; occurrence and use of tolerance; and screening for tolerance. -from Author
