Various chiral stationary phases (CSPs) consisting of polysaccharide derivatives were developed by adsorbing them on silica gel on the basis of information obtained from cellulose triacetate. The chiral recognition ability increases with an increase in conformational regularity. The regularity of cellulose triacetate depends greatly on the kind of solvents used in the coating procedure. This finding seems to be applicable to other coating-type CSPs based on polysaccharide derivatives. Some interactions were considered between a CSP and an enantiomer for chiral discrimination. By using C-13 NMR spectroscopy, 1-phenylethyl alcohol was chirally recognized on cellulose tris(4-methylbenzoate).
