摘要
I give a brief resume of infrared astronomy as a background to the need for infrared spectroscopy from space. I describe the spectroscopy capabilities of the four instruments on ISO and discuss the overall spectroscopic objectives of the mission, illustrating these with some possible observations of the Solar System, the Interstellar Medium, and Galaxies. Finally, I stress the need for work in preparation for the mission. © 1990 Società Italiana di Fisica.
