XPS results show that the photodissociation of diazirine on Pd(110) involves both CN and NN bond cleavage resulting in the formation of adsorbed methylene and adsorbed atomic nitrogen, respectively. The sigma-chemisorbed state of diazirine photodissociates to yield surface methylene. Photodissociation of pi-chemisorbed diazirine results in NN bond cleavage. NN bond rupture is retarded in the presence of sigma-chemisorbed diazirine. We note that the latter observation may be interpreted in terms of interabsorbate species energy transfer.
