PREPARATION AND NUCLEAR QUADRUPOLE RESONANCE INTERPRETATION OF STRUCTURE OF CYCLO-TRI-MU-NITRIDO-DICHLOROPHOSPHORUSBIS(OXOCHLOROSULFUR)

A new preparation of cyclo-tri-μ-nitrido-dichlorophosphorusbis(oxochlorosulfur), NPCl2(NSOCl)2, based on a pyrolytic decomposition of the product of a Kirsanov reaction between a linear phosphonitrilic chloride and sulfamic acid is presented. The infrared spectrum of NPCl2(NSOCl)2 in polar solution is similar to that of the solid state but relative intensities and positions of some of the bands in the solution spectra are solvent polarity dependent. The 35C1 nuclear quadrupole resonance spectrum complements the known crystal structure and its temperature dependence provides additional evidence of the departure of molecular symmetry from C3, in the solid state.
