OBSERVATION OF ORBITALLY EXCITED HADRONS IN SIMULATIONS OF LATTICE QCD

We present a new technique for determining the masses and other properties of orbitally excited hadronic states using numerical simulation of lattice QCD, along with some crude calculations of the masses of the P-wave states. We have reconstructed Coulomb and Landau gauge wavefunctions for these states. We measure the mass difference between the center of mass of the P-wave multiplet and the S-wave multiplet, but are unable to resolve the fine structure of the P-wave multiplet. When extrapolated to zero quark mass and to charm the center of mass of the multiplet is in reasonable agreement with experiment.
