COPPER COMPLEXATION DURING A BLOOM OF GYMNODINIUM-SANGUINEUM HIRASAKA (DINOPHYCEAE) MEASURED BY ASV

Significant amounts (10-30 x 10(-8) M) of copper complexation have been measured during an extended bloom of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium sanguineum. The complexing capacity (C(L)) increased linearly as a function of cell density of G. sanguineum. The conditional stability constant decreased from log K' = 7.8 to log K' congruent-to 6.6 as C(L) increased. Comparison with other data suggests that there is a general relationship between log K' and C(L) for naturally occurring ligands but that anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) underestimates log K'. Changes in log K' point to the complex nature of the ligands involved.
