STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION OF PT10NI90(100) - A LOW-ENERGY ELECTRON-DIFFRACTION STUDY

Surface segregation is measured at Pt10Ni90(100) by means of LEED, using the averaged-t Matrix Approximation. We find that the first layer is enriched with Pt (C1 = 24.3 ± 2.7 at% Pt) while the second is slightly depleted (C2 = 6.4 ± 5.9%). The i distances happen to be very weakly modified with respect to the bulk distance, but a clear oscillation is found: Δd12 = 2.0 ± 0.3%, Δd23 = -1.2 ± 0.4%, Δd34 = 1.6 ± 0.9%. Weak stripes which are observable at certain electron energies indicate that partial o might exist in the surface plane. The results are discussed in connection with results published on other faces of the same alloy. © 1990.
