Histochemical studies of the paraldehyde-fuchsin-positive, auto-fluorescent granules that appear cyclically in the epithelial cells of the hindgut of diapausing larvae of the European corn borer revealed that they were basophilic with lipid and carbohydrate components, but no protein was detected. Changes in apparent activity states within the ileal cells were characterized by changes in granulation, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, cytoplasmic protein, and cytoplasmic RNA. The lysosome-like characteristics of the granules are discussed. © 1968.
