SPIN FLUCTUATIONS IN THE STRONGLY ENHANCED PAULI PARAMAGNETS YCO2 AND PD

Band structure calculations for an ordered solid are used to compute the total energy as a function of volume and magnetic moment. From these energy surfaces the effects of spin fluctuations are included by applying a Landau-Ginzburg model. At the theoretical equilibrium volume we find a metamagnetic phase transition for YCo2, which is suppressed by spin fluctuations above 35 K, while no such transition is observed for Pd. The temperature behaviour of the fluctuating magnetic moments is responsible for a maximum in the susceptibility of both systems.
