Reaction of Me3M (M = Al, Ga) with 2-aminobiphenyl, NH2Bp, in toluene affords aluminium(I) and gallium (II) crystalline complexes of the type [Me2M-N(H)Bp]2. Compound I crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1BAR (No. 2) with unit-cell parameters a = 9.046(1), b = 9.767(1), c = 17.713(2) angstrom, alpha = 78.30(1)-degrees, beta = 75.44(1)-degrees, gamma = 63.01(1)-degrees, V = 1342.5(3) angstrom3, and D(c) = 1.12 g cm-3 for Z = 2. Full-matrix least-squares refinement based on 2644 observed reflections with intensities in the range 3.50 < 2-theta < 45.0-degrees converged at R = 0.054 (R(w) = 0.069). The crystalline product [(i-Bu)2Al-N(H)Bp]2 (III), isolated from reaction of diisobutylaluminium hydride with 2-aminobiphenyl in toluene, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with unit-cell parameters a = 12.835(3), b = 22.306(11), c = 13.545(3) angstrom, beta = 93.00(2)-degrees, V = 3873(2) angstrom3 and D(c) = 1.06 g cm-3 for Z = 4. Full-matrix least-squares refinement based on 1935 observed reflections with intensities in the range 3.50 < 2-theta < 45.0-degrees converged at R = 0.089 (R(w) = 0.099). Compound I resides in a trans conformation relative to aza hydrogen atoms while a cis conformation is observed for III.
