Results are reported from a study by the Japanese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications on home informatization and automation system standardization. After a brief outline of the study process, fourteen services, some now available, some not yet available, are discussed. These are classified into four categories. The services include housekeeping surveillance (home security, and home control), home-management systems (home-shopping and banking and medical supports), cultural services (home educational programs and entertainment) and communication network. Using this information, a standard specification for such sysems is presented.
