EFFECT OF SOME TREATMENT CONDITIONS ON RADIOMIMETIC ACTIVITY OF 1-METHYL-3-NITRO-1-NITROSOGUANIDINE IN PLANTS

Lethal and chromosome-breaking effects of nitrosoguanidine in higher plants have been studied. The mutagen has been shown to be highly influenced by temperature and pH of the solution during treatment. Lethal effects were found with strongly acidic pH and declined with increase in pH towards alkalinity. The maximal rate of chromosome aberrations was found around pH 6 and at a temperature above 20°. It is concluded that under the given treatment conditions methylation of DNA by nitrosoguanidine itself rather than through its decomposition products may be the principal mode of action. © 1969.
