10 female Sprague-Dawley rats, which had been injected with both male and female hormones and tested for the presence of male and female sexual behavior, were given either preoptic or anterior hypothalamic lesions. Preoptic lesions produced cessation of male sexual behavior while leaving female sexual behavior intact. Anterior hypothalamic lesions produced cessation of female sexual behavior while partially damaging male sexual behavior. The results imply that at least partially independent mechanisms for the control of male and female sexual behavior exist within the hypothalamus of female rats.
