For many years combinations of basal narcosis and local anesthesia have been used as general anesthesia for endoscopy. No satisfactory method of general anesthesia is available because the types of patients requiring endoscopy are diverse, and the status of these patients has considerable influence on their response to drugs used, time the operator may spend in performing the procedure, and postanesthetic response and complications. Topical anesthesia properly performed is effective and relatively safe if one utilizes the least quantity of the solution which provides effective anesthesia. © 1969, SAGE Publications.
