Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy superconducting thin films on (0 0 1) SrTiO3 substrates were examined by transmission electron microscopy especially from the plane-view direction. The films were found to consist of domains in 90-degrees rotation twin orientation relation. The general domain size is estimated according to the plane-view images. The domain boundaries were also examined in cross-section and a three-dimensional growth process for the individual domain can be deduced. No precipitates or second phases could be detected at domain boundaries.
