KINETIC-STUDIES OF THE AQUOPENTAAMMINECOBALT(III)/HYDROGEN AND AQUOPENTAAMMINECHROMIUM(III)/HYDROGEN CHROMATE COMPLEXATION REACTION

The kinetics of the complexation reaction between M(NH3)5OH23+ (M = Co, Cr) and HCrO4- have been determined by stopped-flow measurements in acidic aqueous solution (mu = 0.50 M). A new mechanism is proposed to account for the nonlinear acid dependence of the reaction rate at low pH. Aquation of the complex occurs almost exclusively via the protonated species, M(NH3)5HCrO42+. Activation parameters for the Cr(III) complexation with HCrO4-have been measured and are discussed in relation to other oxo anion substitution reactions.
