COLIFORM COUNTS OF POLLUTED WATERS - COMPARISON OF MEDIA AND METHODS

Samples of sewage and polluted river water were used to compare various media for the enumeration of coliform organisms, including Escherichia coli, by the membrane filtration, pour-plate and multiple tube fermentation techniques. The pour-plate method with Lactose teepol agar was found to be at least as good as the other techniques, to which it is to be preferred as it is shown to be more economical, both in terms of time and materials.
