AXON-BEARING HORIZONTAL CELLS IN THE TELEOST RETINA ARE FUNCTIONAL AS WELL AS STRUCTURAL UNITS

Intercellular recordings from the soma and the axon terminal of horizontal cells marked with Procion Yellow in the carp retina show that the graded potentials generated as PSPs in the soma can also be recorded in the axon terminal. These potentials are conducted along the axon from soma to terminal without spikes. Moreover, comparison of the potential amplitudes in soma and terminal shows that this conduction is non-decremental. Such conduction of graded potentials is not explainable by cable theory. © 1979.
