Liquid crystalline compounds with various polar terminal groups containing fluorine have been prepared (see below formula (1) under bar with Z = S-CHF(2), S-CF(3), SO-CHF(2), SO-CF(3), SO(2)-CHF(2), SO(2)-CF(3), SO(2)F, OCH(2)CF(3), CO-OCH(2)CF(3), CO-CF(3), CO-CF(2)CI, CO-CF(2)H, CO-CF(2)-CH(3), CO-CF(2)-C(3)H(7)). The synthesis of these compounds is outlined here and their physical properties (phase transitions, dielectric anisotropy, birefringence, viscosity) are discussed.
